A little known local artist has been in the news recently as Damien Hirst tried to pay one million pounds for a collection of his work. The taxidermist Walter Potter died in 1918 but his collection of stuffed animals lives on. For a long time his creations were on display at the "House of Pipes" in Bramber and I think I may have seen them when I was very, very young. They then moved to Lands End and after a while they were split up and sold separately. I wonder if he was responsible for the stuffed animals they used to have in the Smugglers in Ship St, Brighton? I seem to remember there a weasel striding down a path with his belongings over his shoulder in a similar style.
